Who are we?Voices of Art is a contemporary, visual arts magazine serving San Antonio and the surrounding Texas arts community. Established in 1993, VOA is operated by visual and literary artists who share concerns with the theory and practice of contemporary art. MissionOur mission is to foster a dialogue between visual art and writing. We support emerging and established artists and writers from Texas by presenting art and essays to audiences that are receptive to contemporary art and ideas. VOA contributes to the community’s cultural in several ways. Our articles promote dialogue and debate by introducing the artist, the art work and the voice of the writer to the community. Our advertisements promote activity by sharing opportunities with the community. Our announcements show a commitment by the community to art. The visual look of the magazine spotlights current artistic trends for the community. And, finally, our street presence demonstrates that everyone has an artistic voice in their own community. HistoryWith nothing other than their dream and good names to recommend them, David Freeman and William Keith began Voices of Art Magazine in the summer of 1993 by selling advertising for a magazine that was not even in existence. Their goal was to create a dialogue between the artists of San Antonio and the community as a whole. Freeman and Keith perceived a need for a better understanding of the arts and more exposure for local artists. All the work associated with the magazine, from then until now, has been volunteer. VOA's first issue consisted of 20 pages. 1000 copies were distributed in San Antonio personally by Freeman David and Keith William. The magazine measured 6.5 inches by 8 inches, and was completely black and white, on stock matt paper. VOA has since grown to 56 pages, 32 color and 24 black and white, and has been enlarged to a size of 11 x 8.5, on glossy, 80 lb. paper. We currently distribute 5,000 copies, four times a year. VOA now includes Austin's art community. All of this has been done under the direction and leadership of David Freeman, who has volunteered his time for over 13 years in order to enable VOA to be a viable artistic force. VOA has had hundreds of contributing writers in all fields of art: from working artists to university professors, museum directors, writers, architects, designers, graphic artists, film makers and performance artists. With the support VOA receives from its allies in Austin, McAllen and Brownsville, it is continuing to make its mark on the art of Texas. It is even generating articles and inquiries from other art communities throughout the United States. |
